As well as running a successful furniture business, Sir Ambrose Heal (1872–1959) was a furniture designer, a patron of the arts, a serious historian and an author. Ambrose played a pivotal role in revitalising the family furnishing business in London’s Tottenham Court Road by positioning Heal’s at the forefront of furnishing fashions of the time. He expanded the firm and turned it into a major force in British design by putting into practice the ideal of the Arts and crafts Movement, making well-designed products available to a wide public.

This generously illustrated, large-format book reassesses his achievements in the light of new information. It provides a record of the output of Heal’s own Cabinet Factory from its creation in 1897 until the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939 and also puts it into the context in which it was sold.
